KENNEBUNK — It's a chilly afternoon and the students are lining their bikes up in the Middle School of the Kennebunks parking lot under a steel gray sky.

One hundred sixty five of them are here, both to test their own endurance and spend time with their peers. While most of the year will be spent learning and attending trips with their own eighth-grade team, today is for the class as a whole.

This, the class of 2014, is the 18th class to make this journey. In what has become a MSK right of passage they will travel from the school, through West Kennebunk, into Wells and back again — 19 miles in total — before joining their classmates and parents at the school for a potluck supper.

The first group leaves the school at 2:30 p.m., with the second group seven minutes behind. They will go in that pattern, each group seven minutes later, until, finally, the last group leaves. That group will be the fastest, teacher and organizer Dick Beer says, the most experienced kids. They'll leave last because they'll soon catch up to many of the other riders.
